Acrylic Adhesive Crosslinker
Problem Statement
Acrylic pressure-sensitive adhesives (PSAs) used in tapes, labels, medical adhesives, and protective films require crosslinking to achieve shear resistance and temperature performance. Current crosslinkers include aluminum acetylacetonate (AlAcAc), titanium chelates, and multifunctional aziridines — all pose toxicity, environmental, or regulatory concerns. Aziridines are mutagenic (Category 1B under CLP). The adhesive industry needs a food-grade crosslinker that works with acrylic latex systems.
Market Size
$12.5B global PSA market; crosslinker additives ~$500M
Regulatory Drivers
EU CLP Regulation classifies aziridines as Mutagen Category 1B. REACH SVHC candidate listing for certain crosslinkers. FDA 21 CFR 175.105 for food-contact adhesives. EU 10/2011 for food-contact materials.
Enterprise Interest
No enterprise interest recorded yet. Companies can indicate their volume and urgency to help guide research priorities.
Success Criteria
Peel adhesion ≥90% of aziridine-crosslinked control. SAFT improvement ≥20°C vs uncrosslinked base. Static shear >72 hours at 1 kg/25mm at 25°C. Zero mutagenic compounds in formulation.
Equipment Needed
Acrylic latex PSA emulsion, film applicator, forced-air oven, peel adhesion tester (180°), shear test apparatus, tack tester, SAFT apparatus, stainless steel test panels
